Description of Work

Luzon at work

I use sterling silver and 14 or 18 karat yellow and/or white gold. Occasionally I will also use brass and copper. My stones are precious and semi-precious and I often use uncut crystals in their natural found form. Stones like agates and jaspers I find exquisite because no two are alike and enhance the custom work that I do.

Most of my work is done by the lost wax casting method although I combine other techniques like fabrication (using metal sheet and/or wire and manipulating them) when needed.

In lost wax casting, a model is made from wax, encased in plaster in a metal container then put into a kiln where it is heated to1300 degrees for several hours to burn out the wax creating a hollow of the original. I then melt the gold or silver with a torch and pour it into the mold using a vacuum caster. This process is the most exciting part as you watch the liquid metal flow into the flask. After retrieving the casting, the piece still needs to be finished using techniques like soldering, filing, buffing, and setting of any stones.

About Luzon

Luzon at Machu Picchu, Peru

My design ideas are inspired by my love of nature, places I have traveled, old museum objects, a particular stone I’ve acquired, ideas from my clients, and even visions from my dreams. I approach my work from a place of intuition-for the stone, the client, and the wearability of the piece. My works are described as organic and fluid but are also whimsical, antiquated, and can even end up as a period piece.

My education includes 5 years majoring in art at the University of Utah, an apprenticeship, numerous workshops, and over 30 years of hands-on experience. I am still learning and get instruction from many sources including friends, peers, and the jewelry institution.

While I was at the university, I found myself one day at the jewelry bench of a friend. I began manipulating the metal and I’m still enjoying the process after 30 years. There are continually new stones, tools, or techniques to learn. Working with precious stones and metals; traveling from an idea to creating a tangible 3 dimensional object is so rewarding. I particularly like doing custom wedding rings because it allows me the opportunity to participate in the joy and excitement of my clients by designing something that brings lasting memories. What a wonderful feeling to be a part of that.
